My Aunt Janie used to make this when I was a little girl. It's still one of my favorite dishes. It's easy to prepare and so delicious! You can find the recipe featured in my Volume 1 cookbook.
I guess you could say my brothers and sisters and I were raised on these. I always put a little sugar in mine, but my daughter doesn't like sugar, I guess when she got married she decided to make them and never noticed I put sugar in them and after that that's how she eats them. Another funny thing is my brother growing up thought macaroni grew on trees and he always said when he got bigger in was going to grow macaroni trees, 😂. But thank you for sharing this recipe for people that has never enjoyed this side dish, we always enjoyed it with brown soup beans and corn bread.
My mother made this EXCEPT she would use bacon grease (about a tablespoon), and a can of tomatoes, not stewed, cause that is what we had, and these were one of my favorite. Same church, different pew.
My Mom made a variation of this using roughly a sleeve saltines and a qt of her tomatoes. She added the butter and some Italian blend seasoning and some basil. We called them pizza tomatoes and usually had them with fish dishes.
That takes me back to my childhood in Pennsylvania. My mother or grandmother would often add onions. Delicious memories. Blessings to you. 🙏🏻😋💕
